Say it with me...
This. Week. At. Funny. Fintan.
An intergalactic broadcast on the progress of so-called "In" "col" "atus." This week at Funny Fintan we're off to explore more of Xyzanthynum!
Hitchhikers Guide to Xyzanthynum Pt II: The Camp
Part two! This week we'll be talking about the development of the second area in the Incolatus demo. (Well, the first one in 2021, it's a whole thing)
The only actual combat arena in this demo, the camp in 2020 featured big towers for 'sniper' enemies that never came to fruition.
The first blockouts featured a car with a drill on it and a deeply bulldozed path left in the wake of an uncaring Tigris Nix. As also shown in early sketches by Saturn.

What you're seeing is a path straight to the tower, barely any change in elevation or real 'gamey' design. I was striving for some kind of cinematic realism, as the level at the time served more as a cinematic introduction to map 2 than its own thing. After this demo, we re-evaluated as a team and decided that the map would need more than just prettiness to get by. So in 2021, I had to work on making actually fun arena fight spaces.
At the time the Ormyk army didn't have proper models or AI, we've come a long way since
Early in 2021, the decision was made to destroy the straight path to the tower by way of a broken bridge and a massive ravine. Our concept artist at the time, Saturn, came up with a rendition of the camp looking over such a wrecked bridge.
I introduced players gently to the camp in 2021. By dropping them from the sky straight into combat. Subtlety was not the word with this demo, the idea was to get players straight into playing. This version of the game was all about combat.
You'll notice that this demo actually had original enemy designs (wow!) and also featured a myriad of new decorative plants and big flowers. This arena was closer to the gameplay vision of Incolatus, but due to workflow and time limitations, we had to go with stretched concept art as textures. It never looked exactly like I wanted it to, and so I vowed in 2022 to bring together gameplay AND art style.
Earlier this year, Saturn and I continued to have conversations on how to further give personality to the camp area, and so it was decided that this would be a remote 'charging station' for Ormyk. In this early sketch, you can the early ideation of the new bodged DIY power systems too!
Later on, Jasper had a crack at re-imagining this scene with colour!
The blockout from earlier this year shows the new intent to give combat space to breathe (players found some arenas to be physically restrictive last year.)
Obviously still in development, the new camp arena in the 2022 demo features multiple levels of elevation and an aerial grapple point to keep combat interesting!
At the time of these screenshots, assets were not finished, and as such the powerlines and Ormyk chargers are still funny white shapes. I can't wait to show you all when it's done this September at Pixel Expo.
Stay tuned next week for a special on the brand new 2022 "Power Station."
Developer Insight: Melee Madness!
This week at Funny Fintan, we slice into the melee mud cake and take a look at our trusty Veles in all its crystalline glory.
Starting off with the gameplay changes from last year, instead of only being able to use the Veles inside the portal, there is now a quick and snappy melee option! A quick draw and slice in the blink of an eye is another tool in your vast anti-Ormyk repertoire!
Sidenote: the damage has been boosted here for dramatic effect. For instant lethality, see Flashcut!
You may also notice that the final piece in the melee puzzle, the animations, is placed!
Lots of momentum in the slashes is immensely satisfying, so I tried to capture that as much as I could with these.
That's All Imber!!!

Don't make posters in landscape. Just don't bother. You think it's cool but people get confused and it's... Nevermind.
Thank you for tuning into another issue of This Week at Funny Fintan, to keep up to date with the game you can follow our socials and keep it locked right here on Incolatus.com for more issues each week! We'll see you at Pixel Expo in September. Until then... Just. Don't. Stop. Moving.
